Get to know two of the top performing middle school athletes for the month of September

Tatum Hancock | 6th grade | Volleyball

Hancock is in sixth grade and plays junior varsity volleyball.

Why Coach Sachau picked Hancock: “There are only a few sixth graders playing on the junior varsity team and she’s a starter,” Sachau said.

How long have you been playing your sport? – “Since I was six or seven”

What do you like most about your sport? – “I like the relationship with the girls on the team,” Hancock said.

How often do you practice? – I don’t know

Who’s your favorite athlete? – Me

What’s your favorite sport other than volleyball? – Baseball

How do you feel being “Athlete of the month”? – “I’m actually pretty excited about it,” Hancock said.

What are your goals with your team this year? – “To get better and help our communication skills,” Hancock said.

Jackson Bland | 8th grade | Cross Country

Bland is in eighth grader and runs cross country

Why Coach Sachau picked Bland: “He has been on the cross country team for the past three years and is captain of his team,” Sachau said.

How long have you been playing your sport? – Two years

What do you like most about your sport? – “How I can clear my mind when I’m running,” Bland said.

How often do you practice? – Three day a week

Who’s your favorite athlete? – Usain Bolt

What’s your favorite sport other than cross country? – Baseball

How do you feel being “Athlete of the month”? – “I feel great, kind of surprised,” Bland said.

What are your goals with your team this year? – “To get better and try to win a title for the school,” Bland said.

Siera Jones | Senior | Volleyball/Soccer

Jones is a senior and plays volleyball and soccer

Why Coach Sachau picked Jones: “This is her first year playing volleyball for the school and she’s a starter,” Sachau said.

How long have you been playing your sport? – “This is my first year playing  volleyball and I’ve been playing soccer for four years,” Jones said.

What do you like most about your sport? – “Both you can play as a team and have fun,” Jones said.

How often do you practice? – Five hours a week

Who’s your favorite athlete? – Alex Morgan

What’s your favorite sport other than volleyball and soccer? – “I like watching basketball,” Jones said.

How do you feel being “Athlete of the month”? – “Shocked (it’s her second time),” Jones said.

What are your goals with your team this year? – “To play as a team and win playoffs,” Jones said.

Brijon Warren | Junior | Football/Basketball

Warren- he is a junior and plays basketball and football

Why Coach Sachau picked Warren: “This is his first year playing football and he’s new to the school.” Sachau said.

How long have you been playing your sport? – “Since 4th grade (basketball), this is my first year playing tackle football,” Warren said.

What do you like most about your sport? – The competitive nature

How often do you practice? – Everyday

Who’s your favorite athlete? – “My dad – he’s like 50 and way faster than me,” Warren said.

What’s your favorite sport other than basketball and football? – Just basketball and football

How do you feel being “Athlete of the month”? – “It’s an honor”

What are your goals with your team this year? – “State championships, for basketball and football,” Warren said.
