Dutch Bros: a brew-tiful place

A small coffee shop with countless flavors and smiles. Happy memories and worthwhile causes. Background music and loud laughter. Long lines and fast workers. Drinks to crave and snacks to munch on. Endless variety to ensure that everybody can find something they like. Dutch Bros has it all.

On Feb. 12, 1992 in Grants Pass, Oregon, brothers Travis and Dane Boersma of Dutch descent turned a third generation dairy farm into a pushcart with breve samples on the side of a railroad track. Within a month, the brothers had started their company.

It is now one of the largest coffee companies with over 260 location across seven states, with 20 in Arizona. With over 5,000 employees and over one million drinks sold a year, the company just seems to continue to grow. The ever growing fan base has been dubbed the Dutch Mafia. They continue to support the company and its donations of over $2 million to local communities and nonprofit organizations.

With an insane number of drinks and flavors, the possibilities seem endless. So how do people ever come to a decision?

Hannah Millage, a senior and Dutch Bros fanatic who goes to Dutch Bros two to three times every other week, usually gets the medium iced Electric Berry Rebel but sometimes wants to get something different.

“I like my usual so I get that when I don’t know what to get but, yes, sometimes I switch drinks and get a different kind,” Millage said. “When I want something different, I look off their ‘secret’ menu or I get the Rebel of the month.”

Senior Chelsea Olewnik ordered a Freedom Frost from Dutch Bros. The frost is more of a milkshake than a blended coffee, the Freedom Frost has vanilla and blue raspberry with blue raspberry drizzle.

One way to find a new drink is through the Dutch Bros website; it has an arrangement of ways to find something that you would like. On the menu section of the website, there is a search bar where you could look up a specific drink or a flavor you like to find your perfect drink. Below the search tab is different icons for the different types of drinks. The icon leads to the different flavors. When those specific drinks are clicked, it takes you to a list of the individual ingredients, different style, nutrition facts, and the other available drinks.

Another way is to ask the employee behind the counter; they are always happy to help. Tell them your likes and dislikes, and they will try to make the best drink for you. Dutch Bros also has a Surprise Drink where you can specify the type of drink, i.e. Rebel, Latte, Smoothie, etc., and tell the employee what you don’t like. They will then surprise you with a drink that can be exchanged for a new one if you do not like it. Posted next to the windows or along the drive thrus should be the drinks of the month. This is switched monthly and is always a good way to find a new drink. The employees are always willing to mix flavors that the customer asks for.

Dutch Bros has a large fan base even with the larger, more well known companies. Millage explained why she prefers Dutch Bros over big name organizations like Starbucks.

“Dutch Bros has so many more options than Starbucks,” Millage said. “ I would rather have an energy drink that I can mix and match flavors in rather than some boring coffee drink. Dutch Bros lets you explore your options and Starbucks really doesn’t.”

A fan favorite of Dutch Bros are the stickers that are handed out on the first of every month. Each month provides a new sticker, just ask for one. But get there fast, they run out quick!

The excellent customer service, fun atmosphere, endless drink possibilities, free stickers, and great community involvement makes Dutch Bros Coffee a great morning stop or afternoon hangout.
