The benefits of eating bugs, and how it could help your health
Bugs are super gross.
But are they? Bugs are actually super nutritious, and very good for your health. Many studies show that bugs are extremely good for you, and can even be a substitute for meats such as turkey.
A study from the FAO in 2013 says that around two billion people worldwide eat insects as a part of their diet. However, a lot of people consider eating bugs a sign of disgust. But, the idea of eating insects is not a laughable idea. Many bugs, like crickets, are jam-packed full of nutrients and proteins. In fact, medicalnewstoday.com says that “…100 grams of crickets contains around 121 calories, 12.9 grams of protein, 5.5 grams of fat, and 5.1 grams of carbohydrates. While 100 grams of ground beef contains more protein – around 23.5 grams – it is also much higher in fat, containing around 21.2 grams.”. With this fat reduction, it is possible to combat obesity by eating bugs. And not to mention fighting malnutrition, as well. A healthy serving of bugs is very good for you.
A lot of people refuse to eat insects. What a lot of people don’t know is that they may be already eating bugs. The Defect Levels Handbook states that 100 grams of peanut butter contains about 30 insect fragments, and 100 grams of chocolate contains up to 60. With this in mind, maybe people will become more open to the idea of eating bugs as a part of their natural diet. A lot of continents around the world eat bugs, some including Asia, Africa, and Australia. It seems as if only in America we refuse to eat insects, with 72 percent of Americans saying that they are not open to eating bugs.
Valerie Stull of Scientific reports says that, “Like many edible insects, crickets are considered an environmentally friendly protein source…”. This means that we won’t have to waste land, feed, and money on cattle and other livestock, but instead, we could just eat bugs. Crickets are also a good source of fiber. But, despite all these benefits, some say that they are still gross. Many insect eaters say that bugs are very tasty, and can be deep-fried, grilled, dehydrated, etc. to produce some very tasty bugs.
So in conclusion, bugs are the way to go in terms of health. If you do not eat bugs, consider making the switch. Your future self will thank you. Bugs are extremely good for you. That is why eating seemingly disgusting, horrifying, and creepy bugs can actually be one of the greatest health decisions of our time.
