The Best Leonardo DiCaprio Films

melody steele, Staff Writer

Leonardo Dicaprio was born in Los Angeles, California and started his career at a very young age. He is known for his edgy and mysterious roles that made the world fall in love with him. He’s worked with iconic directors to make some of the most successful and popular movies in Hollywood. Like many others, I have my opinions on the best Leo films out there, so here is my list of his top eight films. (Beware: some spoilers may pop up in these reviews)

#1: Titanic (1997) In this dazzling historical romance, Leonardo DiCaprio flawlessly portrays a poor artist, Jack Dawson, who falls in love with rich girl Rose DeWitt Baker aboard the R.M.S. Titanic. From the moment we lay eyes on him, we fall for his mysterious wrong side of the tracks personality. Leo makes the love between Jack and Rose seem very real, which makes the movie even more magical. Among fans, there is a lengthy theory that the movie should have ended quite differently. The heartbreaking death of Leo’s character influenced a ton of response from outraged fans.

#2: The Revenant (2015): We’re used to watching Leo play characters that are put together and well-kempt, but in this 2015 film we see a whole new side of him. Leo plays Hugh Glass, an explorer who journeys through uncharted American wilderness and endures hunger, brutal weather, and a vicious bear. This film won DiCaprio his very first Oscar for “Best Actor” that he deserved. Like “The Wolf of Wall Street”, this film is very long and it takes a lot of focus to watch through the entire thing. Fortunately, there are quite a few action scenes that make it worth the wait.

#3: The Wolf of Wall Street (2013): The Wolf of Wall Street introduces us to another Leo we aren’t really used to. DiCaprio plays rags to riches stock-broker based on the real-life person Jordan Belfort. Leo once again manages to capture the audience with his charm and amazing acting skills. He also pulls off a pretty believable Long Island accent. Though the movie is quite long and a bit hard to follow, it was very well written and Leo pulled it all together with his skills.

#4: The Great Gatsby (2013): The Great Gatsby is a classic story that is loved by many. How can you top that? Make a movie about it starring Leonardo DiCaprio. Leo plays this part perfectly. He connects with Gatsby’s emotion and wonderfully executes the role of the troubled rich boy. Leo still plays a charming con man, but he takes it to a whole new level with this movie. Unfortunately, many have butted heads over this film. Some say that this movie disgraces the novel, and others saying it was a beautiful rendition.

#5: Catch Me If You Can (2002): This early 2000’s film gives us yet another example of Leo portraying a successful conman. It tells the story of a man who works as a doctor, lawyer and co-pilot of a major airline all before the age of 19. This is the only film that DiCaprio has worked on with Steven Spielberg, who was the director.  Throughout this movie, Leo impresses his viewers with his dedication and charm.

#6: The Aviator (2004): This drama/biography uses DiCaprio to tell the story of Howard Hughes. The film tells the story of an aviation pioneer and successful Hollywood producer. Leonardo DiCaprio successfully plays the part of a man who seems somewhat gilded. Famous and happy on the outside, but struggles daily with demands of obsessive compulsive disorder.

#7: This Boy’s Life (1993): A few years before the release of the iconic Titanic was released, a slightly younger Leonardo DiCaprio was starring alongside Robert De Niro. Leo played a rebellious teen named Toby in the 1950’s who struggled with his abusive stepfather. At this point in DiCaprio’s career, he’s relatively new, only having done a bit of TV and starred in Critters III.

#8: Romeo + Juliet (1996): This classic Shakespearean tragedy was set in the postmodern city of Verona, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes. These two do a pretty good job at playing star-crossed lovers, even though the movie itself is terribly cheesy, and the acting could be better. Fortunately, Leo makes up for it with his gentle voice and perfect hair.
