President’s speech starts 2018 off with high hopes

Donald Trump, our president, isn’t the best president we’ve ever had, nor will he ever be— however I do believe that Donald Trump is and will continue to pave a way towards a better American society. We’ve heard him say it a million times and some of us hate to hear it, others chant it. “Make America great again,” has been his campaign slogan ever since 2015— but now we’re finally seeing him push his motive and hearing all about his accomplishments really isn’t anything to dis. Trump has said some pretty hateful things, some he’s apologized for, some he didn’t but that’s something a lot of people still hold on to, but we need to put behind us. What Donald Trump said in his State of the Union address should be the only thing we focus on for now.

To this day, it’s really hard and sometimes can even be dangerous to say which political party you’re rooting for, we’ve seen how dangerous riots have gotten, people attacked for announcing their allegiances to the Republican or Democratic Parties. I feel that everyone can agree that as of that Donald Trump’s speech on the state of our union wasn’t a laughing matter. CBS reported, ”President Donald Trump received high marks from those who tuned in to watch last night: 75 percent of Americans said they approved of his speech.” Now it’s clear, whether or not you love or hate Trump, no one could disagree that this speech has done some good deeds for America, big or small. We’ve seen incredible changes such as unemployment rates go down, major tax cuts and even a surge in the stock markets. He highlighted not just his party’s achievements, but even brought in special guests who he has personally praised for their heroism and valor, such as police officers, those who’ve served in the military and even the American public for their hard efforts and support towards one another.

To get into the specifics of Trump’s stated achievements he has said that his presidency is responsible for making some great changes to America. He stated, “We have created 2.4 million jobs, including 200,000 new jobs in manufacturing alone.” He also said, “We enacted the biggest tax cuts and reforms in American history.” and, “Since we passed tax cuts, roughly three million workers have gotten tax cuts bonuses, many of them, thousands and thousands of dollars per worker.” This also turned out to be true. He has so far done tremendous acts to get us more jobs and more money in our pockets, it’s fair to say this is the best we’ve seen the American workforce in decades.

Moving onto Trump’s plan for immigration, he’s actually done some good for those who’ve been harmed by the repealing of DACA (Deferred Action for Children Arrivals) who are children that have been illegally brought to America. By him repealing this he had taken away the protection of these young adults from deportation. He has also said that he has ended the “visa lottery” (a system where random citizens from another country can obtain a green card and receive citizenship), to put an end to chain-migration, which is when one member of a visa lottery winner brings his whole family and their extended family which lead a lot of bad people to legally migrate to America. He has claimed that he is working on a “merit system” which determines whether or not you can stay if you meet their education and work requirements and display good moral character, you can acquire your citizenship in 12 years.

We all know this wouldn’t be a Trump speech if he didn’t say something about North Korea. He has said, “As part of our offense, we must modernize and rebuild our nuclear arsenal, hopefully never having to use it, but making it so strong and so powerful that it will deter any acts of aggression.” He then quickly followed his plan up with, “But no regime has treated their people more horribly and brutally than the cruel dictatorship in North Korea. North Korea’s reckless pursuit— of nuclear missiles— could very soon threaten our homeland. We are waging a campaign of maximum pressure to prevent that from ever happening.” Now this is a lot of talk, but I do feel like we could win this cold war we have going on with North Korea if we actually give them something to fear.
