Zumbo’s Just Dessert: a sweet surprise

Having spent the last two hours stargazing, we were spent. Ready to sleep but wanting some background noise, we turned on Netflix and started looking for something to fall asleep to. We eventually decided to watch a baking show. “Zumbo’s Just Desserts” was the winner. But its colorful set and crazy concoctions kept us up.

The Australian baking show is named after Adriano Zumbo, their own Buddy Valastro, also known as the Cake Boss. His crazy creative edible inventions are incredible and, apparently, absolutely delicious. Although it is named after him, the main judge was Rachel Khoo, a British cook with her own baking show and incredible style and makeup, specifically the lipstick that stays perfect despite eating messy desserts. There was also Gigi Falanga, the person who kept the bakers on track and let them know how much time was left. She could be helpful, but mostly she just was annoying and unhelpful. Not to mention, whenever anyone was having trouble with something, she always had rude comments and distracted the contests from solving their problems.

The contestants were given a vague statement of what they were supposed to make and how much time they would have. With that vague decree, the contestants made some crazy desserts that looked stunning. Zumbo and Khoo would choose the worst two desserts and the contestants who made them would have to go into the Zumbo challenge. The Zumbo challenge was to see which contestant could better replicate the taste and visual of one of Zumbo’s famous desserts. The winner would stay in the competition while the loser would have to go home. Each time someone would leave, Khoo would tell them that she hoped “all your sweet dreams come true”.

Then there were the contestants. We both liked Ali and hoped she would win. Her creations were beautiful and she is so cute. Kate, on the other hand, was very rude to the other contestants. Her desserts weren’t very appealing, at least visually. Although, Zumbo and Rachel thought they tasted amazing but with how many times she messed up the visual aspect, she should have gone home sooner. Ashley was also a favorite of ourselves. He was kind and really helped Ali when she started to freak out when she messed up her dessert. But every story has a villian, and in Zumbo’s Just Desserts it’s Daniel. No matter how the judges critiqued his creations, he always felt as though he did the best. Although he made it to the final four, his ego may have gotten the best of him because he was quickly sent home after making unfinished and unappealing desserts. Part of the reason we continue watching this show was because of the contestants. They were all so quirky and odd that it made the show even more entertaining.

The show was cut to make it look much more dramatic than it need to be and there were some parts that didn’t need to be shown, but it’s a pretty good show. The desserts and how they were made were incredible to see. The contestants are all interesting and different personality wise. The show was very fun to watch and I’d watch more if another season is made. We both would rate this show a four out of five stars, even though we enjoyed it we also felt as though some parts were unnecessary. Other pastry/dessert shows that are popular on Netflix are, The Great British Baking Show and Nailed It. We highly suggest everyone checks out Zumbo’s Just Dessert, hopefully you will think it’s just as sweet as we did.
