Have you ever been so stressed but didn’t know what to do about it? Self care is extremely important. Especially for a student with a lot on his or her plate. Your mental health is also important but not just academically, it can also be deadly to your overall health. That’s why it’s important to pace yourself and make sure that you don’t overwhelm yourself with tasks.
In an article called ‘The Epidemic of Anxiety Among Today’s Students’, It says that, “In February, a Pew survey found that 70 percent of teens say anxiety and depression is a “major problem” among their peers, and an additional 26 percent say it’s a minor problem.”
Anxiety is a major problem among teens and can be treated. Self care can be a huge help in treating and preventing anxiety. Some people see self care as just taking a break from what you are currently doing, but it’s a little more than that. Taking care of your mental health and well being can help manage the stress that school, and sometimes people around us, bring.
If you have been feeling stressed and need something to help you cope, here are some ways that might help.
Get 7-8 hours of sleep
Plenty of sleep will help you feel more energized and awake. It will also hopefully give you a more positive attitude.
Exercise 20-30 minutes, three to five times a week
Get the proper nutrition
Eat balanced meals
Limit sugar/caffeine intake
DRINK LOTS OF WATER!
Relax/Take a nap
Stretch, take deep breaths, meditate
Join student organizations
Make new friends
Surround yourself with people who make you happy
Study with a friend
Take breaks when studying (20-30 minutes)
Take your time while studying instead of cramming. Let the information soak in.
Clean your room
Clutter can increase anxiety or be distracting
Watch something funny
Watch a movie, TV show or video for a quick laugh
Another option if you are ever feeling stressed or just need someone to talk to is talking to our school counselor, Mrs. Amy Boven. Everyone is different of course, these are just the options that work best for me. I highly recommend these options.
