Imagine Prep has four functional microwaves for everyone to use.

Microwave PSA

It has become apparent that some people aren’t appropriately using the microwaves, they’re either making messes or stinking up the lunch rooms. This is a P.S.A to all the students who use the lunchroom microwaves, this will inform you on how to safely and politely use the microwave (but maybe if you just used the instructions on the meal you want to cram into the microwave you wouldn’t even need to read this). If you’re just reading this because you want to be extra safe (which is extra respectable) and you don’t want to destroy, explode, or ignite anything then that’s fine. This small guide will help you to learn the proper ways to use a microwave without setting things aflame.

To Kill a Microwave

  • In your microwave, there’s a device called a “magnetron”, which turns electricity into heat, but even cooler then that, so anything that can conduct electricity will create a charge between the heat conductors (magnetron) and the metal item. This will create sparks, and electricity, while flashing pretty colors. While it´s cool, it can still damage the microwave, so don’t cook silverware or aluminum foil.
  • Other things people have microwaved which destroyed the object in the microwave, broke the microwave, or made everyone include: phones, glow sticks, uncooked eggs, styrofoam, yogurt or butter, grapes and some other fruit, uncut peppers, stainless steel anything, aluminum cans, thin plastics, and nothing (the microwave can actually catch on fire if it has nothing to cook).  Don’t try anything I just mentioned, there’s some online videos you can look at of people microwaving random things, but they’re probably professionals and have safety equipment (honestly, don’t try these).

Proper Microwave Etiquette

  • Once you use the microwave, it’s important to be respectful to anyone else who might use it as well. Make sure that if you make a mess you’re the one to clean it. Everyone should be cleaning up after themselves— it only takes a couple of seconds.
  • Don’t cook food that smells bad, such as: fish, Brussels sprouts or durians (if you brought a durian to school… why? They smell awful).
  • Make sure that the food you’re cooking can’t make a big mess, any kind of soup or meal with a sauce will pop in the microwave. So please put a napkin or plate over it to reduce the mess.
  • If you’re cooking something in a container, make sure that the lid is at least unsealed. When a microwave cooks something in a container, the heat pressures the insides of it. So if the lid isn’t slightly off, it will pop in the microwave and make a mess.

So please keep the microwaves clean as it will keep your classmates happy. Have a storm-tastic lunch!
