Comic rivalry

The corporations that brought you the classic superheroes, like the bullied nerdy kid that can now shoot webs out of his hands and the man that has a lot of gadgets up his sleeves and his Batmobile, have true fanatics fighting on which corporation they like more. In my opinion, even though Marvel and DC have come up with incredible heroes that never fail to save the day, Marvel has always had that “pizzaz” that DC really doesn’t bring to the table for me.

Ever since I was a little kid, Spiderman has always been my favorite superhero. The ordinary, bullied brainiac that was the laughing stock of the school, that all of a sudden turned into New York’s savior whenever there is a cry for help. Most of Marvel’s superheros used to be ordinary people, just like you and me, with problems that we can relate to. If you don’t believe me, look at some of the other superheroes Marvel created like Iron Man, Fantastic Four, Hulk, Hawkeye, Captain America, and Wolverine. All of these heroes were just normal human beings that never knew that in their future they would be protecting mankind. Through these characters, Marvel demonstrates to the audience that anyone can become a superhero. I think that this a very inspiring message to give to everyone, especially little kids. Most of the DC heroes like Superman and the Flash are not human and do not share similar traits and characteristics we do. While, they’re abilities are amazing and simply out of this world, in my opinion, it’s hard to relate to them.

Don’t get me wrong, DC also made classic superheroes such as, the famous Batman. However, I believe that DC is known for their villains and not for their superheros. For example, I believe that the Joker is more iconic than Batman. I mean, look at the television series called “Gotham”. It stars a villain named Jerome that acts just like The Joker, sharing his appearance and behavior. The producers took the villain from Batman instead of the hero, which proves my point of which character is more iconic.

Now, let’s get into the Avengers VS. the Justice League. While both groups of heroes do an amazing job at fighting crime and kicking butt, I think that it’s easier to look up to a group of individuals that is just like you and I, and that group is the Avengers. In literal terms, you can also actually look up at the screen and see the Marvel characters clearly when they are in action. The Justice League is just so dark while the Avengers hits you with popping bright colors.

The Justice League is made up of Superman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Green Lantern, Batman, Cyborg, and the Flash. More than half of these superheroes are from a different planet or from a place that is completely made up on Earth. The only member on the Avengers’ team that is not from Planet Earth is Thor. That’s it. The other members are from real places right on this planet.  Some of these places include New York, Canada, Afghanistan, and parts of Europe. Fans of Marvel can actually go to these places and say “Wow! This is where one of the Avengers is from!” They can’t travel to Gotham City, Keystone City, or Coast City if they wanted to. The Avengers are just a group of humans that have human emotions, human thoughts, and human problems that combined their given powers and technology to save their own kind. To me, the more relatable a team or a superhero is, the more likable they are.

When I was at Ace Comic Con and Stan Lee, the creator of the Marvel heroes, was being interviewed, he stated that DC said themselves that they are now going to do the same structure and style of Marvel Comic books. Seems to me, even DC wants to be like Marvel.

Before the DC fans come at me, I just want to clarify that I don’t think that DC is a terrible corporation that makes terrible superheroes. I respect the hard work and dedication the creators of Batman, Superman, and all of the other DC heroes have put into making them come to life on paper and on the big screen. I respect DC and I do think that some of their superheroes are pretty awesome. However, Marvel has just always stuck with me ever since I was a little girl and I just ultimately believe that it’s better than DC.
